Your First Week Living in Hanoi: Set Up a Manageable Routine
Your first week in Hanoi does not need to solve the entire stay. Begin with the apartment arrangement, a few daily essentials and a manageable route around your immediate area. Once those work, you can expand the routine with better information.
Make the first week a sequence of small tests
Confirm the handover, buy for a few meals, try the daily journey and check the work setup before expanding the routine. Note any mismatch while it can still be described specifically. A missing utensil, an unclear laundry process or a call interrupted by cleaning each needs a different answer. Resolving those small issues is more useful than collecting a definitive city guide on the first day.
Confirm the practical handover
On arrival, check that the apartment and included services match the confirmation. Ask how to report a maintenance issue, contact the property and use any equipment provided. If an item is unfamiliar, request instructions rather than guessing.
Keep the address and entrance details available offline. If another person will join later, confirm that guest arrangement with the property and share the correct arrival instructions privately.
Make the first errands small
Start with the items you need immediately: food for the next day, basic household supplies not included in the stay and whatever your normal routine requires. Check what is already provided before buying duplicates.
Find one practical place for groceries or a meal and learn how to return. You do not need a definitive list of Hanoi's best shops on the first afternoon. Verify current opening and the actual route rather than relying on an old recommendation.
Test the daily journey
If you have a work or study destination, try the route with time to spare before the first essential appointment where possible. Save the exact entrance and a local contact. Treat map estimates as planning aids, not guaranteed journey times.
If working from the apartment, check the actual table, chair, power and connection early enough to discuss any mismatch. Keep essential needs separate from preferences.
Review after a few days
Notice what creates friction: a missing kitchen item, uncertainty about laundry or a housekeeping time that overlaps with calls. Raise specific questions through the property's agreed channel. A short description and photograph of a relevant issue can be clearer than a general complaint.
Leave optional exploration flexible while the routine settles. This guide concerns everyday accommodation planning; entry permission, employment and other formal requirements need their own current advice.
Ask AN Residence about an extended stay with your dates and essential living requirements. Request the current proposal and service details before booking.
