Grocery Shopping in Hanoi: Build a Useful First Shop

For a first grocery shop in Hanoi, start with what your apartment and schedule can actually support. Buy enough for a few straightforward meals, check the storage and equipment, then expand once you know the routine. A large shop before arrival can create more inconvenience than it solves.

Shop in two rounds

Use the first round for the next day's essentials after checking what is provided. Use the second once you know the equipment, storage and your schedule. This reduces duplicate supplies and unused food without needing a perfect shop list. If ordering delivery, agree the actual entrance and receiving process instead of assuming staff will accept or refrigerate the order.

Check the apartment first

Look at refrigerator space, cooking equipment and the items already provided. Ask for confirmation if a particular appliance is essential. A kitchen photograph is not a complete inventory, and supplies visible in a picture may not be included in your stay.

Think through the next breakfast and one other simple meal. Add personal essentials you know you will use rather than trying to stock an entire household on the first day.

Choose the shop for the task

A small shop may suit immediate basics, while a larger store can be useful for a broader choice. Verify the current address and opening of any recommended venue before travelling. Do not assume an old expat list reflects present stock or hours.

If you need imported products or a specific brand, contact the store or check current stock where possible. Availability is not guaranteed simply because the item appears in a previous visitor's photo.

Read and ask about products

Check labels, quantities and storage instructions. If dietary requirements matter, ask the relevant seller and use clear written wording where needed. Familiar-looking packaging does not establish that the ingredients match a product you buy at home.

For unfamiliar fresh ingredients, start with a small quantity and an actual meal plan. Buying less can make it easier to learn what you enjoy and what fits the apartment setup.

Plan the journey back

Consider how you will carry the shopping and whether a vehicle can reach the building entrance. Avoid making a large first shop the final task of an already long sightseeing day.

If using delivery, confirm the exact address, contact instructions and current property process. Do not assume staff will accept, refrigerate or hold an order without agreement.

Ask AN Residence about your apartment requirements before booking, including the kitchen features that matter. Once the stay is confirmed, request current neighbourhood guidance rather than relying on an unverified shopping list.
