Hanoi Craft Shopping: Ask About Materials and Makers
Craft shopping in Hanoi becomes more interesting when the conversation moves beyond whether an item is authentic. Ask about the maker, material and process, then decide what matters to you. A useful object, a contemporary design and a carefully documented craft piece can each be worthwhile without pretending they are the same thing.
Keep a provenance note with the purchase
If the maker or material is part of why you want an object, write down the seller's explanation and keep any supporting label or receipt. Distinguish information you have been told from information independently documented. You can enjoy a contemporary craft purchase without calling it antique, and you can decline an item when the story is more certain than the evidence.
Ask a specific first question
Try asking who made the object, where it was produced or how a particular surface was created. A seller may be able to show maker information or explain a workshop connection. Treat that answer according to the evidence available rather than automatically turning it into a verified history.
If the story is central to the purchase, ask whether it can be recorded on a receipt or supporting note. Do not invent a provenance when information is missing.
Look at the material and use
Check dimensions, finish and any care instructions. For a textile, ask about fibre composition. For ceramics, ask whether the item is intended for the use you have in mind. Appearance alone does not establish suitability for food, heat or another practical purpose.
Take time to inspect the actual object you will receive, not only a sample on display.
Compare without reducing everything to price
Two similar-looking objects may use different materials or production methods. Ask what explains the difference before assuming one seller is simply more expensive. At the same time, a higher price is not proof of provenance or quality.
Buy within a budget you are comfortable with and keep the interaction respectful. You do not need to make a purchase merely because someone has explained the work.
Plan the journey home
Ask about protective packing, size and weight. Check destination requirements for materials or objects that may be regulated, using current official guidance for the exact item.
Arrange your Hanoi stay with AN Residence separately from shopping plans. If you need parcel acceptance or storage, ask the team what can actually be arranged before relying on it.
